“Matched by Design”

I’m thrilled to be able to share that the pilot of my TV show “Matched by Design” has premiered on the Style Network. Here is a link to a recent press release! http://www.thefutoncritic.com/news/2013/08/15/style-premieres-competitive-home-and-party-planning-specials-717215/20130815style01/

It’s a fun show that shows designers competing for a project and then watching the creation of the project from the winning designer! “Matched by Design” will air again today on the Style Network at 4:30pm PT.

Cheers!

Inspiration vs. Motivation

Inspire comes from the Latin inspirare=to breath life into

Inspiration comes forth from within. It’s what the light burning within you is about, as opposed to motivation, which is doing it because if you don’t do it, there will be negative repercussions. Motivation is making myself do something that I don’t really want to do. Inspiration is having the clear picture of what I am wanting — and letting Universal forces come into play to get the outcome.—Abraham

Enjoy the Journey!

You can never have a happy ending at the end of an unhappy journey; it just doesn’t work out that way. The way you’re feeling, along the way, is the way you’re continuing to pre-pave your journey, and it’s the way it’s going to continue to turn out until you do something about the way you are feeling. -Abraham

Come Alive!

I just listened to the 2013 Harvard Commencement Speech delivered by Oprah Winfrey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMWFieBGR7c and am touched by the simplicity of her message. As we journey through life, we will undoubtedly encounter obstacles and doubt, questions about our place on this planet. In order to remain centered, we need to determine what makes us come alive, brings us passion, and makes us consequential in the world. For it is in giving that we truly find sustainable happiness. Viktor Frankl said it best in “Man’s Search for Meaning”–the meaning of life is to be of service to others!

Find your gift, your giving and your destiny!

Compassion and Empathy are human qualities that can be acquired and cultivated!

I am heartened to read the following excerpt from a blog entry by my dear friend Dr. Jay Kumar:

“You may be wondering, if all human brains have an empathic response and mirror neurons, why do some people harm, terrorize, and inflict pain onto others? Scans into the brains of criminals, violent people, and psychopaths indicate their brains might have underdeveloped mirror neurons and a low empathic response than in the brains of healthy humans. The bottom line is that mirror neurons can be developed in the brain, meaning that compassion and empathy are human qualities that can be acquired and cultivated in all of us!”

Consciousness

Today I attended a wonderful program that was TED-like in format, with a roster of fantastic speakers who shared their insights on global consciousness, each from a unique perspective. We had scientists, men of the “cloth”, people who run NGO’s, and educators, each with a belief and passion about our interconnectivity with each other, and the world. The fact of the matter is that we are all connected on an energetic and transcendent plane, almost like an airstream of thoughts and energy that is flying above us that we can draw from at any time! The greatest scientists of our time including Einstein and Edison believed in this communal consciousness because of their empirical research, not in spite of it!

Science without religion is lame; religion without science is blind.” Albert Einstein

We are all part of this planet, one that we have to nurture, not ignore, and part of a global community that is really a brotherhood. We may appear different on the surface, but we are truly the same on the inside!

So embrace your neighbor and care about the world around you! As the wise Quakers say, “thee lift me and I’ll lift thee and together we shall ascend!”

happy together and a wonderful example of support when the weather gets chilly!

Let it Shine!

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us, it’s in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson, A Return To Love

Hokusai Says by Roger Keyes

Hokusai says look carefully.
He says pay attention, notice.
He says keep looking, stay curious.
He says there is no end to seeing…

He says everything is alive——
Shells, buildings, people, fish
Mountains, trees. Wood is alive.
Water is alive.

Everything has its own life
Everything lives inside us.
He says live with the world inside you….

It matters that your care.
It matters that you feel.
It matters that you notice.
It matters that life lives through you…

Look, feel, let life take you by the hand.
Let life live through you.

Choice

“There is a space between stimulus and our response. That space is our ability to choose our response. In that space lays our strength, growth and happiness.” Stephen Covey

The late Dr. Covey’s words are profound in the inclusiveness of the statement. We all have the freedom to choose, the “space between stimulus and response”, even if we don’t like our options. Some of us are born with many gifts and support, making our lives much easier to navigate. When a stimulus happens, the space we have may be quite large, allowing us to make a generous choice in our response, perhaps not reacting to something unpleasant or being extra-giving when needed. For example, if someone says something unkind, we have the choice of being unkind back, ignoring it, or saying something pleasant or innocuous in reply. In the case of a person who doesn’t have the tools of maturity and perspective, the response might be a negative retort back, or worse.

The bottom line is that it all boils down to choice and everyone has the ability to choose, the freedom to chart our own course in life. The children of disadvantaged families often do not see the space that they have or it is very narrow. They may also have been raised with examples which are very contrary to what society would recommend or approve of. This is not their fault. Alas, it is my belief that deep down they know that doing something bad, harmful or illegal is in fact wrong. They may choose to do it in order to “belong” to their family or neighborhood, particularly if they are part of a gang which might impose still penalties for not following along. There is, nonetheless, a choice.

I recently had the opportunity to meet with a group of young men who are incarcerated in a juvenile detention center and I left with the confirmation that these men do know between right and wrong, that they have the intelligence to make good choices for themselves, and that with society’s help, they can develop the emotional maturity necessary to do the “right thing” when the situation arises.

Life is not always a bowl of cherries and occasionally we are in the pits. But even then, when we are at our lowest, we still have the freedom of choice and that, my friends, is power!
